Chinese and Japanese in one spot!!!! Talk about a dream come true. Service is always excellent. They always recognize people after being there just a few times. I tend to order the same thing. My favorites are Broccoli tempura with their tempura sauce!!! Their Hot and Sour Soup is the best I have ever had. I love their inari They always cater to my needs and make me chow mein with just broccoli in it. This is my go to spot in Castro Valley. I wish they were in Danville. I would be there everyday.

Every time I'm here, every table that's occupied by Castro Valley's seniors either are eating walnut prawns or sweet and sour pork. I really wish my fellow senior citizens are willing to step outta their comfort zone and try something advent-ours out of their VERY extensive menu. Like Tuna Tartare, Jalapeno Poppers, Wasabi Mussels, & Drunken Clams.

The food doesn't blow my skirt up but it is good and the prices are fantastic for the area. I normally have the salmon and sashimi. The Mongolian beef is also very good. I highly recommend you get the salad...the dressing can't be good for you because it is amazing!!!

Nice atmosphere, classy looking... Decent service. Not very crowded at all, so we thought it was best not to try the sushi. Judging from the looks of it, we tried to play it safe and order only cooked items, except for the: Sashimi Grade Tuna Tartare (asian guacamole, spicy tuna, wakame seaweed, yuzu soy). This was actually good! A glass filled with guacamole and tuna... yumm! We also tried: *Bouncing Fillet Mignon wok-tossed cubed fillet mignon, black peppers, onions -This was as expected. Quality of the meat was decent relative to other restaurants. Filled with tons of onions. *Sweet & Sour Shrimp (stir-fried with pineapple, bell peppers, onions, sweet & sour sauce) -Shrimp were good. Again, tons of onions and bell peppers. I don't really like the idea of paying for steamed rice per bowl :( It seems like they charge for everything they can here! Not to mention, this restaurant is already pretty pricy for asian food! Good, but def better and cheaper places if you're willing to drive out of Castro Valley. If not, then Genghix... I suppose, why not? ;P

Tried this place because of a recommendation from Rosemarie d... the dining area was nice, however, the music did not fit the style at all, they were playing Elton John's Candle in the Wind at one point. Other than the music, the food was decent. Started off with Crab wontons which were good albeit a little sweeter than I expected. Then moved onto the miso soup, the price seemed high, but the portion size was decent, however it was slightly watered down a bit. My sister had the assorted sashimi (9 pieces), I gotta say for $14 I expected the pieces to be slightly bigger, but i'm used to other sushi places. At the same time it didn't come with tuna sashimi, I thought it was usually standard to get tuna, salmon, and another sashimi, but I guessed wrong. I got the Girly Man roll, portion size was what i expected, spicy tuna kicks in around the 3 piece, that's when I kept reaching for my water. There was another sauce under the roll which was sweet, so by the end of the plate, I was getting tired of the sauce. For Dessert we got the Bomba Exotic (mango, passion fruit, and raspberry sorbet covered in a white chocolate shell with dark chocolate on top) definitely hit the spot. Minus 1 star - while it's nice to see a waitress be attentive, I didn't appreciate them trying to take the dish when i was still finishing. Minus 1 star - while the layout was nice and spacious, the dark lighting, and odd musical mix threw off the dinner. They do have lunch specials, so if you're wanting sushi, i'd suggest going during lunch so you can pay less.

Food: underwhelming and the Lion King sushi roll I had was insipid. Service: horrid and embarrassing. After having forgotten to tip, my group was literally chased into the parking lot by a waiter wild with bewilderment and indignation at our flub. We tipped and have never returned. ABSOLUTELY WRETCHED! Decor: too nice for the service, and quite nice for Castro Valley. Plus the name is quite chic. If management were to do a little menu quality control (and decorum instruction for surly waiters), I think this would be a great option for less casual occasions in CV.

I tried the Monogolian chicken, Kung pow chicken, Korean beef short ribs, beef teriyaki, and seafood crispy noodle. I thought all the dishes were good. I'd return to try some of their other dishes. They have a nice variety of different Asian cuisines from Thai to Japanese and Chinese. I liked the atmosphere in here. Its a nice sized restaurant with nice decorations and dim lights. Good for group dinners. Service was friendly. Prices were decent. Most entrees were $10 and up and portions were generous.

My bff and I were hungry after washing the car and doing yard work in the hot sun yesterday and even though we had big plans to BBQ that evening we were just too exhausted to light up the Q when it came down to it... Genghix is right up the street from my place so we decided to give it a try. We ordered the spinach garlic noodles, wok tossed garlic spinach, and salt and pepper scallops. The spinach garlic noodles were very interesting - miniscule noodles cooked al dente with lots of garlicky goodness. The scallops were delicious but they would have been more appropriately named "tempura scallops and green beans." The spinach was, well... spinach - it was good but they served us enough for an army. I love spinach but maybe they could offer a smaller portion for 2 people.

Sushi/Sashimi Review only: So, bought a groupon to try this place out, but I waited to try it w/one of my sisters or niece, who are fans of raw fish. My sister ordered the Fresh Oysters w/Ponzu (Outstanding! Fresh, Creamy and delicious); Tuna Tartare (Amazing) and Girly Man Roll (she loved it and shared it w/her kids). I had the Shiro Maguro Sashimi (OMG, huge pieces and oh, so good), Godzilla (Yum! I was just getting too full already) and the Double Hamachi (outrageously addictive). If you're worried about the price, I think the quantity that comes w/each order will justify the price. We were starving and were overly stuffed with just what we ordered. Would love to come back when we have more people to try the other dishes on the menu. Thank you Groupon for the adventure!

Atmosphere -check Service- check Presentation- check Flavor- check check check Value- check Very good. Sushi, rolls, hot Chinese dishes, a mind blowing dim sum or appetizer menu- like 100 items- I know crazy huh! I enjoyed all the items we sample and ordered as main dishes. Loved the Genghix roll! - has crab and fried shrimp in it! So Good. The duck my sister order was good too. I must do....I will take my girls for a treat...after a month of good school effort with NO hick-ups! - High School, they act like it is Neurosurgery! Great Place

Don't go during busy hours. Servers are noticeably more agitated but get nicer when the restaurant is less busy. This is understandable but I was really put off by the waiters attitude and his shortness with me to answer simple questions. In the end we stuck it out and I'm glad we did. I got a bento box and was satisfied with the portions. The salad in the bento box was scrumptious and the dressing was so tasty. I'd go back just for the salad. They also had some interesting rolls, I wish i could have bought them all. I don't remember which one we got but it was good, we ordered it again. Also, the parking lot in the shopping area it's in gets really packed. You may wanna get their during a down time or expect to circle the lot a couple times before you find a spot. When i have the time I'd like to go back again.

My fall back all you can eat sushi place with family when you don't want the big crowds. It's nothing fancy but it's something worth stopping here to eat. Its a tiny location with a party room, but the food is pretty good and they keep it well replenished for those of us with the bottomless gullets (speaking about myself :D ) They have a small but tasty array of sushi all you can eat as well as many other asian dishes and crab and shrimp. Their deserts are also a good and sweet ending to your meal. If you've never been, just go once with a group and share. It's a really great night out. Enjoy!

Friendly albeit unorganized service. Numerous different waiters asked us what we wanted to drink and they kept asking us if we would like to order something else and we kept telling them we were waiting for our appetizer - which came thirty minutes after we had finished our sushi. The food was good but not great. Had spicy tuna, California rolls, the spicy mamasita, and spider rolls. As well as their jalapeño poppers and two desserts. Overall a decent time but not worth going again.

Ok, this is the second time, and the last time, I am ever going to a restaurant where an owner is EXPECTING a tip for take-out...??? My husband and I have gone here once before: Food is ok, but a total knock off of another famous food chain, I might add. We go back a few months later for a second time. Once we order our food-- which took forever for the waitress to get-- my mother-in-law calls because the baby isn't cooperating. So we tell the waitress to put our order to-go because we had to leave. We get the food and pay the waitress. We walk out the door and the owner calls us out because my husband forgot his phone. We thank him, as he looks down at the bill and then says "Oh, you are so kind, so generous," then slams the bill holder and barges back in the restaurant. Wow. When do you ever tip someone for ordering take-out??? Never going back here again.

3.5 stars. Honestly, I thought this place was ok. The interiors are very groovy and cool and I was expecting to have something out of this world.. However, I just didn't see good execution of the entire experience. The food was just a-ok and i didn't see how the sushi fused well with all the other entree's. Since this They definitely need to refine their menu a little more. Also, the food is "americanised" so some of the dishes came of a little bland for my asian palate. I think they would do a lot better if they changed the food back to its original taste and style. Maybe, as they stay open longer, they will tighten things up and provide the kind of experience you look for when u go to a place as exotic looking as this venue. Shall try it again and post an updated review.

First time to this restaurant. One of my best friends and his fiance' were kind enough to share this place. Atmosphere was modern, nice touch. The waitress was very attentive and spot on at first, but faltered toward the end by not asking anyone at the table if they needed refills except my bud. I was disappointed about that so took off a star. Food quality and taste was excellent, however, the Seabass was tasty, portion served was way to small! The vegetable dishes ordered were well cooked. Overall, it was a very good experience. I'm gonna bring someone else here on a date to see if she likes it.

Huge variety, very fresh sushi and nice family friendly atmosphere. The prices are reasonable as well. This place is one my family's favorite in Castro Valley.

Apparently this place changed their style a few years ago, now they've got a huge menu of all types of Asian cuisine and the place looks great. We had some of their rolls and Nigiri sushi last night and it was totally fabulous. Rivaling our very favorite Yanagi in Dublin for sure. The decor is like a toned down Elephant Bar -- super nice, clean and upscale. Our waiter smiled every time he came over, was kind and helpful, and never let our waters dip below half full. It was easy to be an optimist here! Will definitely go back, this place was fabulous.

They have very good very reasonably priced bento boxes for lunch. They even accommodate to special orders. I am on a no carb diet so they made my sushi with no rice and extra veggies instead of rice. It was good. I'm also happy with their chicken teriyaki because they season the chicken as well as add the teriyaki sauce

  • Jessica W.

I come here every now and then with my family and the food and service is always good. Whenever I go here I always get one of there lunch specials. The lunch specials are either chinese (rice with a side of some type of meat or veggie), and there's the bento option. I always get the chinese lunch special. It comes with soup and salad for $6.99 Monday through Friday. The food isn't overly salty and just the right amount of portions. Every time I come here I get seated right away, and there's never a wait. This place also has some really nice decor going on.

I was brought here for a dinner, by some peeps that lived locally and are regulars. They did the ordering and I just went for the ride. What actually came out were things that I usually would not order on my own, thus a lot of lip biting on my part. This is one of those ambitious Asian restaurants where they try to incorporate multi-ethnic dishes under one menu. The track record for these types of places usually don't fare well, as I am sure it isn't easy to pull off. To do sushi, pad thai, and Cantonese chow fun all properly is not an easy feat. I will give them that everything was presented very cleanly and artfully modern, so yay for that. The flavors however weren't as dialed in as I'm used to getting them. For example, Mongol's Beef just tasted of beef and fermented black beans, not much garlic, ginger or chile. The sushi rolls, outside of the modern plate which it sat, were just your average crazy makis. Definitely nothing to rave about. Even though this place may not be right for me, I did notice almost a full dining room of patrons enjoying it far more than I did. So good for them cuz I really wasn't feeling it. And I'm A-Ok with that.

Everytime I go to this restaurant, me and my friends are super happy because the food is presented nicely and the owner always have a converstaion wiith us. We always like to drink sake each time we come. They offered us to buy a big bottle of sake so that each time we come, we can drink from it so that it'll save us a lot of money. They also gave our own wooden cup with our name on it so when we visit, we get the same exact cup. I'll say that they serve their customers well and interact with their customer with heart.

OK my last hour at Castro Valley after seeing my folks, and having a nice lunch at this restaurant. Very nice asian fusion food, and food was at good temperature, and the sashimi was tasty. The waitress was very attentive to our family as they knew my folks, so the service was really astonishing. I will definitely goo back to thi restaurant when I go back to visit my folks. Definitely a 4 star.

Very Mediocre. Went here when Katsu's was closed for a week. We mainly had chinese with a couple rolls which were very americanized and huge/saucy. Chinese menu was a disappointment especially when the old Genghis Khan buffet was not that bad. Won ton soup was non distinct, but It is nice that you can order one small bowl. Garlic spinach was too garlicky and overcooked. Not "fresh" and healthy looking. Chow mein was a bit salty without any distinct taste...I prefer the "skinny" noodles which they did not have (old Genghis did). Japanese potstickers were big and bland. Did not have any beef/chicken plates but not sure if I'd gamble going back. For CV, stick with Katsu's for Japanese and Hong Kong BBQ/Full Belly for Chinese.

Just a quick update... Went here again because I was craving some sushi. We went on a saturday night, so all they had open were seats at the sushi bar. We took it. Even though we wanted a table, the sushi bar turned out to be a nice surprise. The Sushi chef was very friendly, patient, and most importantly, made good sushi! Our food came out fast, and watching him make it right in front of us was nice. Will come back soon.

Finally got to try the lunch items. Huge portions! Got chicken teriyaki with California rolls. For $8, it was worth it. Salad dressing was a bit too sweet and gooey for me. Chicken teriyaki was overly saucy, but expected. Miso soup was good. California rolls had too much mayo in it for me, but decent. Will come back to try more lunch items.

Came at the recommendation of Ryan d... but only ordered take out. I was rather impressed with the portion size for the price. Not too shabby! It's pretty much a staple that I get a salmon skin hand roll @ every new sushi spot I try and this was no different. Surprisingly, this was one of the better salmon skin hand rolls I've tried (not THEE best, that's reserved for Fuji's in Davis). Also got a spicy tuna + California roll lunch combo. It came with soup + salad (which I really liked the salad). Can't wait to try this place for real and actually get a sit down meal.

OK The Coconut Tiger Prawns had too much batter and too dry, the sauce underneath was too sweet The flavor was missing on the Chicken Salad How can you make tuna tar-tar blah and the seaweed underneath good? The Singapore Vermicelli was none descript Nicely remodeled café, not sophisticated Cheerful Servers Maybe the menu is too long to give attention to the food Bathroom were adequate Deserts were good

this place is a 3.5, really. The food is decent and the service is pretty quick. I always get the same thing every time - cucumber avocado roll - and i'm always pleased. That's pretty hard to mess up though. Their house salad dressing is so good too. I can't get enough of it. They give you a decent amount of food as well. Whenever we go there, we usually stick with the sushi, because that's usually the best stuff on the menu. I think you really have to pick and choose what you get. I've also tried their veggie fried rice (alright, but nothing I couldn't make), veggie pad thai (not my favorite), and their mushroom appetizer (good wasabi-mayo dipping sauce). I think I'll just stick with my usual, though. What makes me put this place as 4 stars is the waiter service. Every time I have been there, they have always been very quick and friendly. This place is good if you can't think of anywhere else to go and want to grab a quick bite to eat that isn't junk food.

Again, this is my favorite restaurant in Castro Valley. In my last review i gave 4 stars, due to disgusting dust on lamp shades and window blinds. But today, after another delicious visit to this restaurant I noticed that the place was cleaned up, so I'm awarding them full 5 stars!!!! And I will be back soon:))

I've been to this place countless times and I always have a pleasurable experience each time I go. Food quality is second to none and service is always prompt. Desmond is probably one of the most kick-back restaurant owners I've met in a while. I remember a few weeks ago I went in for some lunch - sat at the sushi bar, and ended up staying for almost 2 hours! Had their lunch special and tried 'Bluefin Tuna' for the first time. About 95% of the time, I'd come here for the sushi / Japanese cuisine. I've had a few of their hot plates before (Chinese, etc.) and they were good - but I'm still a fan of their fish. Perfect for those first time dates because of the unique ambiance that this place sets.

I will first say that there was a great variety of dishes on their menu. Now onto the food. We each ordered one of the bento box lunch specials. When we got our miso soup, it was hard to finish because of how salty it was. When our main food came out, I was pleasantly surprised by the dressing on the salad. However, the more I ate, the sweeter it seemed to get. The california rolls were odd. They like to put black pepper on the rolls which made it less appealing. My mom got the chicken teriyaki, my husband got the salmon, and I ordered tempura. They were all just okay. We did walk away full, but the food didn't make us feel too good afterwards.

This place is in a really good spot along castro valley blvd and redwood road. It is in a huge shopping center with lots of parking and the restaurant is fairly big. Inside is very decorative and the waiters greet you and seat you quick. The owner is always super nice and he is almost always there. This place is also very clean and organized. The lighting isn't very bright which is a nice calm touch. They are bit pricy for the portions you get, but the food is very good. They have a wide variety on the menus from appetizers to meals. I usually get the vegetable tempura or the teriyaki chicken w/ white rice because I am not a fan of sushi, but if you are a fan you should try this place out because they have a lot to chose from. I have been here with people who have gotten sushi from here and they did like it.

Came here in search of a new sushi place near home, and Genghix is one of the few Japanese places that doesn't close midday. I had to specially ask for chopsticks and hot tea, but luckily they didn't charge me for it. I can't imagine eating Japanese/Chinese food without tea, and always dislike places that charge. I was craving vegetables and ordered the Green Beans with Black Bean Sauce lunch special. This was so good! The green beans were cooked well, with a great amount of crisp bite left to compliment the rich sauce texture. The Dragon roll we ordered with this was very pretty, and tasted just as good. Hutch ordered a Tempura and Beef Teriyaki lunch combo, which was also really tasty. I always compliment a place that will serve shrimp tempura with their regular tempura order, and we even got two pieces. Overall, the service was friendly, although we went during a less busy time. The food was prepared quickly and plated really prettily. I definitely want to try this place again.

Let's just say I'm glad we had a $25 restaurant.com certificate because I don't think I'd be thrilled paying full price. Overall Genghix caters to special clientele and I definitely don't fit that bill. :-) I don't care for these Asian fusion- "do it all" restaurants because they can't specialize in any one dish. We ordered mongolian beef, spicy thai pork, pad thai, garlic sauteed green beans and the enchanting moment sushi plate (two spicy tuna hand rolls which we substituted for a 6 piece roll, 12 pieces of sushi, a rainbow roll, and a tiger roll). Food was average...my main points of discussion are: -Mongolian beef and thai pork seemed to have very similar glazed sauces and garnish. Really could not taste the difference except for the texture in meat. -Sushi was very average, quality of the fish wasn't that great in my opinion and the "spicy" tuna tasted as if they forgot to put the spice. This also reminded me how weak the rainbow roll is--it's basically a glorified California roll. In conclusion, if you're looking for "done up" Asian food with a random assortment of dishes then you might enjoy Genghix. Otherwise, go to your local Thai, Japanese and Chinese eatery on different nights. I think this place just couldn't make up their mind when creating the menu.

When this place was a buffet, it was packed !!! When they restocked the salt and pepper crab, there would be a mad rush to the stall. It was crazy !! There would be also a mad rush to the sushi table when they finished the deep fried sushi w/ some kind of special sauce. It was crazy here, people were bumping into each other, but no one was upset, everyone was happy because the food was good. OK, back to reality, it is now a regular restaurant. Been like this for a couple of years now. The sushi is still excellent. I had the lion king roll (see my pic), it was delicious !. My wifey had the teriyuki chicken(see my pic), it was dry and over cooked. We also had the pad thai(see my pic) d it... did not taste like pad thai. Maybe they make their pad thai different. Bottom line about this place, its OK. sniff, sniff, I want the buffet back...

We bought a groupon for this place, and after reading a variety of reviews, I was cautiously optimistic that we'd like it. Turns out, the food is very good, and I am glad we gave it a try. First, the place is sort of noisy. Although the decor is quite nice, and it has soft lighting, I would still not consider this place romantic or calming at all. There was something about the acoustics that made it rather loud. The food: Very good. And reasonably priced. The house salad is generous, and costs only $2!!! Order it. You'll be glad you did. The sushi was delicious. Very cleverly presented, with some unique combinations I had not seen before. Like another reviewer, I recommend the "Oh My God" roll. Seriously spicy, and soooo good. We also got the "hot Mammacita" and loved that one too. Again - spicy. We also tried the california roll, which was average to good. Beers were reasonably priced ($4.50 for a light beer). We will return whenever we are in the area. The food makes it worth the trip.

This place is really good. I've only been here for lunch - several times with my boyfriend. They have great lunch special deals, which we've gotten every time. All of the lunch specials come with their special house salad, which is the best salad ever! Sooo good! I wish they sold their dressing in bottles for people to take home. I would totally buy it all the time. I've tried their walnut prawns, which is different, but good. Their version is coated in a light batter, I'm pretty sure it's tempura. They put the sauce on top of the prawns, so it looks fancy. The sauce can be a little much, I usually wipe off a bit. I really like their Lion King roll --- they make it look fancier than other places and it's really flavorful.

There was a living social deal so I thought I would give this place another try. I mean it has been about 10 years since I ate ate the place and they have even changed the name to Asian fusion so why not give them a shot. Ordered the garlic veggies (good), the garlic green beans (yum), veggie fried rice (ok), and the veggie chow mein (not worth the calories to me but not bad), and the vegetarian hot and sour soup (very good). Although I will probably still be on the search for better Chinese food, this place is a great fall back and right down the street from my house.

The best sushi in Castro Valley! We have been regulars since they first opened. Can't go wrong with the Girly Man, Oh My God and Warrior Chicken.

I've eaten the food here twice and both times the quality was excellent. The service was fantastic. They were quick and efficient, the rolls were wonderful quality and I was very pleased. We even brought our children and they loved the food. My 8 year old stated that he was very impressed with the quality of his sushi :) We also have had a few of their noodle dishes. I hope to go here again soon or take out.

I love this place. I've always has great service. The food is always fresh and prepared well. I eat here at least one a week and have yet to have a bad experience. The owner is constantly out and about making sure his restaurant is running well and he even prepares much of the sushi they make... Beware his spicy tuna - fantastic but hot!

Yay! My first review on yelp! So I've been really curious about this place for awhile and knew that it had once been a buffet but had switched to an Asian fusion place. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you go in, you forget that you're in CV. About a month ago, my sis-in-law and I were craving Japanese for lunch. We went to I Sushi and they were closed so we ended up going over to Genghix. We ordered several rolls. The Rainbow roll was different from what I'm used to (the crab has mayo mixed in it, like a crab salad). My favorite was the Lion King roll...it just melts in your mouth...yum! She ordered a hamachi handroll and they made a mistake so we got her handroll and a hamachi roll as a bonus. Went for lunch today and it was just as good. This time I went with my parents and uncle. There is a lunch special ($5.99) which my uncle got. It was the mongolian beef and it came with a scoop of rice, soup and salad. My dad got the lunch combo with salmon teriyaki and sashimi. It comes with miso soup, salad and rice. They both liked their dishes. My mom and I shared the beef short ribs ($6) and that was flavorful and tender. We all shared some rolls, of course the Lion King roll, a salmon and shrimp tempura roll and lobster handroll. I will definitely go again and try some of their other rolls and dishes. Its good because you can have Japanese or Chinese food or both =)

Their sashimi is BOMB. We had a pretty looking boat thing. Four of us ate it... and it made me full! The salmon sashimi just melts in your mouth! Even my hubbie who doesn't like sashimi, liked it. Must go back for more!

Pretty good!!! Went here last night with my parents and used a Restaurants.com cert. Sushi was americanized.... saucey and well... that might have just been the stuff that my parents ordered, so don't knock them for that. the service was very good as well. The atmosphere is a bit unique, and the tables were a bit on the high side, but that's ok. a good experience. I'll look to get some certs for this place as well sometime.

This is definitely my favorite Asian Fusion restaurant in the East Bay! The decor has the perfect "Asian" touch, open space, dim lighting, sushi bar and clean bathrooms. I would prefer to sit at the tables rather than the booths because it's so squishy that I tend to sink in it and can't eat comfortably. I love the fancy binding on the menus ~ it makes you a little scared to look at the price at first but once you open up the menu you will find everything to be quite affordable! To start, I would highly recommend the tuna seaweed salad. It's raw tuna served between two sheets of squishy seaweed and shrimp chips, with a few drops of sriacha sauce around it. The presentation is beautiful! The ingredients in this app is designed to be eaten together, so that you get the delicately flavored tuna, crispiness of the shrimp chips, the soft taste and texture of the seaweed and the kick of the sriacha all in one bite! You MUST take my word for it and try this app!!! Take a look at their sushi rolls and you will find the best of fusion creativity. The titles and descriptions make each roll sound more than enticing! But when you taste the roll itself, only the orgasm in your mouth will do it justice! If you're into cream cheese on your sushi, the Zen Roll is a must-have. And of all the places I've had the Lion King Genghix definitely does it best! It's hot and melty, you'll find yourself licking the foil afterwards! The service is awesome. Simply awesome. They'll throw in a freebie here and there for regulars. Great for a sexy date, mature family members or colleagues. I can't wait to go back to try everything else on the menus!

Excellent food. Nice little variety of Asian cuisine, but we stuck to Japanese (sushi rolls, teriyaki, miso soup). I ordered the Genghix Roll, the 49er roll, and the Silicon roll, all of which tasted fresh and great. My GF ordered a nice little dish called a Pokemon Salad, which is basically poke, mango, and some other items presented nicely in a glass. For dessert we had the Bomba Exotic, which is three different sorbets (mango, passion fruit, and raspberry) covered in a white chocolate shell with dark chocolate drizzled on top. Definitely a very good mix, and it wasn't too rich, so we didn't feel guilty after each spoonful. Service was outstanding. Food and rolls were brought out quickly and our server was frequently checked on us to fill our waters and see if there was anything we needed. I'd like ot come back when the restaurant is a little busier to see how service is then. Minus 1 star due to the restaurant being a little too dark. Could use some more lighting.

This place had a bad fishy smell when we walked in. Booth was designed for someone tall and skinny -- seat was low and too close to the table. Changed to a table which was sticky. Waitress was rude, left without ordering. Ick.

Genghix, who would have thought you would be in Castro Valley? I don't understand some of the poor reviews. I'll admit, I'm friends with one of the managers, but from my experience this place is pretty spot on. The atmosphere is just amazing. I really had a hard time believing where I was when I walked through the huge Asian double doors (new as of last week). The lighting is very intimate; the table lights themselves are really gorgeous in and of themselves. The earthy feel of the decor just adds to the ambiance: wicker style table and chair accents, wooden earth tones, et al. The food I ended up having was primarily the sushi portions. For starters, we had "a girly man" roll: fried tempura, salmon, tobiko, avocado, etc. This has the perfect textures blended together making each bite an adventure. Next was the Pokemon, a glass of amazingly tender tuna, mango, avocado, and kimchee sauce. I couldn't help but fall in love with this dish. My friend actually created this dish. He's going to have to teach me how because I absolutely love the richness of the kimchee sauce. The mango adds the perfect amount of citrus needed to liven up this dish. My absolute favorite of the night! The next dish was the tuna tartare. All-in-all, not a bad dish of seaweed, avocado, and tuna with rice crisps. The sriracha on the side really should be blended into the dish itself. If you want tuna though, go for the Pokemon. Lastly our shiro-maguro and hamachi sashimi were served. The topping on the shiro-maguro was a little too cold and took away from the flavor of the dish. I had to let it rest a little while before continuing with the rest of it. The hamachi, on the other hand, were little pieces of heaven. It was the meatiest, mouth-watering, tender little pieces of fish I've ever had. I seriously couldn't have ended my meal with anything better. The presentation of the food here is gorgeous. The leaf garnish on the roll was cute and added to the name, almost like a feather in a hat; the pokemon being served in a glass situated in a bed of radish and wasabe garnish was clever even. Presentation here is 5 star alone. Now, I almost would give this place a 5-star rating, but I need to visit one more time to see if the couple minor food mistakes were just flukes. The pricing of the sashimi and nigiri are standard ($4-$5 for nigiri). If you think it's over-priced, then stop eating at Sushi Tomo. As for the prices of the maki rolls, I would like to see those lowered to around $12 average instead of $14, but for what I had, I'm not at all upset about the $14. All-in-all, a fantastic place. I will certainly be coming back and venturing into their other foodie realms. It's hard to get "fusion" just right because of the interpretation of it. For some people, they want "authentic" regional dishes when they see them on the menu, which ruins the idea of "fusion" in the first place. For others, "fusion" is exactly what you'd expect, a variety of styles of dishes which take cues from one another to help create a new dining experience.

3.5 We had lunch here on Sunday afternoon for part of sissy's birthday plans. Happy Birthday, Sis! The lunch menu items come with miso soup and Genghix's house green salad, which is mixed greens, carrot ribbons, wonton crisp and a delicious house dressing, sort of a sweet sesame dressing that was really good. This salad was a major step up from the small bowl of iceberg lettuce normally served, and the house dressing is a new fave. There were many lunch menu choices and you cannot beat the prices of $8.00-$15.00! Rach went with general chicken, which was good, but the sauce was a little sweet and they are a little too generous with the sauce. Nim had the orange chicken, again it was good, but too much sweet sauce. Sand had the kung pow shrimp which looked and smelled really good. Their sushi was good, and I'll give them another shot, maybe for dinner. They've remodeled the place nicely and everyone was nice and attentive. Plenty of seating, both large tables and booths, for groups. Hard to find much in Castro Valley, so I would say give them a shot.

In one word...CRAPPY!!!! Crappy food...crappy service...crappy smell. A friend and I came here for lunch and the minute we walked in, we almost gagged at the smell...which was that of rotten fish. However, I'm not THAT picky and thought we should still give it a try. BAD decision. First off...Our waiter acted as if we were taking up his time by ordering and never once came back to check on us or any of the other tables he was serving. He spoke and moved so fast, it was hard to keep up with him. (Note...there weren't many patrons but quite a few employees, so it wasn't like they were uber busy.) The food...CRAP!! My girlfriend ordered a spicy chicken dish and a couple of sushi. I tried her chicken and we both agreed the chicken tasted like dull KFC pieces dunked in spicy sugar. It was so gross. We shared her California roll and gagged because it tasted like...get this...canned tuna with mayo. I'm sure it was imitation crab, but I have had plenty of imitation crab that tastes good. My poor girlfriend ended up not eating 90% of her meal. I ordered beef teriyaki and eating the beef was like chewing on shoe leather dunked in sugary glop. It was the worst beef teriyaki I have ever had and I couldn't even finish it. Back to the service...since our waiter didn't come back, we had to flag down another waiter to get refills on our drinks. HE was nice. Then we had to flag down a waitress to get our bill. My friend and I REALLY were trying to be nice in spite of the lack of friendly service. Maybe our waitress was unhappy that she had to wait on a table that wasn't hers, but once again, another rude attitude. My friend and I agreed that we will NEVER go back. I don't care if they are offered me free food for life...no matter how cheap it is, I would be throwing away my money eating here.

My friends and I went to Ghenghix for my birthday last night and once again, the food and service was extraordinary! My friends and i asked for a custom roll to match a crochet sushi we brought in and not only did they make it, it was absolutely delicious! After we finished our meal, the server brought me a beautiful bowl of green tea ice cream with a candle and sang Happy Birthday to me. Every time I visit Genghix I notice there are more and more people and I think it's great. It's very close to the 580 freeway AND the Castro Valley BART station.

Well our friends who live in Castro Valley just started coming to this place. They were excited to share it with us, and for good reason! The place itself has a very nice Asian ambiance.... the big wooden door frame inside with the wooden bells on it is super cool! We were seated right away on a Friday evening, and the service was very friendly and easy-going. We started out with some edamame, which was an enormous amount that lasted us through our meal, the Crunchy Roll, and various other sushi items. The Crunchy Roll was delish!! Mmmm.... I could easily eat one all by myself, and it was darned big! For my meal (because we didn't do family-style this time) I got the Salt & Pepper Scallops. They're tempura-style scallops, very quickly fried so that they were still tender, not rubbery. It also had tempura-style green beans too, which were nice and crispy and had a bit of spice to them. The sweet-n-sour type dipping sauce was a nice counterpoint flavor to the spicy scallops. Mmm mmm good! Hubby got the Jalapeno Poppers (I know, weird, huh?) for dinner... they were spicy, creamy, sweet and fishy. Weird combination, and still, it worked! I had one, and it was tasty! We're definitely going to have to come back here to try some more items on their extensive menu. So many things sounded so good! I really enjoyed myself, as did my hubby and our friends. We're looking forward to coming back!

The first time I tried Genghix was for dinner. I wasn't too impressed, and felt like I paid too much for basic chinese food. Then a few weeks ago a group of us from work decided to give it a try. We figured that $6 for lunch wasn't too bad. We've been back a few times since then. The walnut prawns are good, but a bit too sweet for me. Maybe if they put the sauce on the side I'd go for it again. The spicy basil prawns were good, but not too spicy. I definitely smelled like garlic afterwards though. They also had really big slices of leek and mushrooms in them. So if you don't like either one, you'll have to eat around it. The szechuan prawns were good and very spicy. My face turned red so everyone teased me. I ate it all. My coworkers like the mongolian beef too. We'll probably keep eating here. The waiters are getting to know us, and the food is decent for the price. I'd definitely stick with lunch though, I'm not sure it's worth what they charge for dinner.

Love this restaurant! Great food, extremely friendly staff, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices. This is a restaurant I frequent on a regular basis...both for dining with friends and take-out. The restaurant is extrememly clean, and the staff bends over backwards to make you feel at home. The food is really good...and very reasonably priced.

Love this place! The food is always very good (and yes, it IS Asian Fusion, since it includes other cuisines besides Chinese and Japanese), and the service is incredibly good. I live close by, so I eat there a lot, but I would definitely drive there if I lived further away. It's that good. The prices are also very reasonable (I don't really know what those other people are comparing to... Panda Express maybe?) There are also always lots of Asian folks eating here, so whatever. The chicken lettuce cups here are so good, that I can't order them anymore at PF Chang's or anywhere else, because nothing else compares. I don't eat sushi, so I couldn''t tell you how it compares, but I've eaten some of the Thai and Chinese dishes - all good. Their sashimi is excellent as well - very fresh. By the way, I think it's ridiculous that someone who never even stayed to eat, wrote a bad review anyway.

So I currently reside in the CV area and have for about a year. Because I don't plan to live here too much longer I haven't really explored the area and usually just visit my Oakland/Emeryville favorites but today I decided to give this place a try. Yeah probably won't go back. I arrived and ordered to-go. I was told it would be about 10 minutes. Moments after I ordered another couple came in and ordered miso soup. About 7 minutes later someone came out with 4 to-go containers and set them on the counter. I assumed they where mine but the hostess checked them and didn't say anything so I decided maybe they were not mine. 5 more minutes pass and the other couples soup comes out. Okay now Im starting to wonder where my food is. The hostess checks the other couple out and works on closing out bills from eat-in customers. Well the hostess now realizing that I have been waiting a while rechecks the containers that have now been sitting out on the counter for 10 minutes and goes "Oh these two are yours" Wait excuse me? They have been sitting here all this time and now you want to give me lukewarm food because you didn't pay attention? Granted it was a little busy but I just don't like waiting for lukewarm mediocre food. To me it wasn't good enough to wait as long as I did- Hey I dont mind waiting for good food but so-so stuff shouldn't take so long to make.

The food was cool, I can't complain about it at all. However 6 dishes on the Pre-set table were dirty and there was a little "guy" floating in my wine. If you check your dishes you should be fine.

I was getting ready to do happy hr and dinner w/ Wanda at bijou in Hayward, but one thing led to another and we just ended up down the street from her house to this place. I actually been meaning to try this place for awhile but never had the opportunity until the other evening. I actually know one of the owners of this place and yet they are still getting this bad review from me. Sorry gum go. I don't up sell any place. They definitely get a star for effort and that's why they are getting two stars. We ordered a bottle of their salmon creek chardonnay. When it came out and was uncorked and as I took my first sip, I realized the wine was at room temp. Strike One. The waitress asked if i wanted ice in my glass. I guess that is Strike two. The waitress did however switch out the bottle of wine with one that was more chilled. I'm not one to complain usually, but I wanted to get my drink on. I would've been fine if she just put the bottle on ice and not ice in my glass. I guess this place doesn't know how to serve wine. Wanda was like, quit complaining they are gonna do something to our food. Anyways, I'm not a roll person but Wanda is, so we had a few rolls. They were "OK" nothing great, nothing to make a trip for. Overall the food is mediocre but the service "well at least they try" to show excellent customer service. Would not return to this place by choice.

I believe this restaurants food is delicious or at least the sushi is. I didn't order any other non-sushi dishes, except for the tuna ceviche I suppose, which was delicious and had a nice twist to the Spanish or Cuban etc ceviches. Good presentation as well. Ordered a few other rolls and nigiri. The rolls were great, melted in my mouth. Some had intereesting smells and good way of making the sushi. I can definitely tell that they put their heart into make it. Forgot the name of the dessert but it was a 3 flavored ice cream wrapped with white chocolate and milk chocolate. It was delicious and original. Service was very prompt as well. Got us seated, water, food, and checks very fast. I would definitely come back to this restaurant to try other dishes.

Ok so I have been searching for good Chinese or Asian fusion food and man I have been disappointed so many times! PS don't eat at The Silver Spoon!!!! Got way better review then this place & I spent $60 and didn't like any of it. Oh and they don't include white rice with a $60 order? For real! Okay anyway, back on topic haha My boyfriend & I went in after learning about my grandfather becoming very ill. So as you can imagine I wanted a nice quite dinner and was praying for some at least decent Chinese. It was 8:30 and it was as expected much slower then the dinner rush I was trying to avoid. * The ambiance was amazing! I use to manage a high end restaurant so this is key to me. Low lights, nice music, great decor and of course you want the place to smell great if you are eating there ;) and it was! * Our server was named Gilbert was very friendly & on top of everything. At one point my bf had taken his last sip of water and we actually heard his shoes sliding & fastly stopping to turn, grab the water jug & fill my bf. I was impressed! ** FOOD ** The prices are unheard of for the quality & type of food! For combos which include rice, veggie & main dish such as Mongolian Beef ...etc you pay $10 and it is a large amount you get. You can also come for lunch get the same thing, but with salad & soup for 9! WE HAD - Teriyaki chicken : Delicious...my boyfriend ended up stealing half lol Beef Trriyaki : So I am not usually a huge steak eater. I love me some filet mignon don't get me wrong haha So naturally I thought I wouldn't like what my bf ordered. It was perfect!! Thinly sliced steak that you could taste had marinated for quite some time and had NO fat on it what so ever! I ended up eating more of his then mine! Potstickers aka Gyoza : It was more along the lines of Japanese so Gyoze vs potstickers BUT I LOVE BOTH...probably my fav food of all time. They were great :) Not a 10, but definitely worth going back for! Honestly best I have founbd in CV have been from the bowling alley!!! My bf knows I love them so he went to get me a burger and came back with those. Needless to say he gained some plus points lol

It's so wonderful to have a place like this in Castro Valley. The ambiance feels more like a "city-restaurant." Pretty much every dish I've tried here has been delicious. And when you order the Edamame, they give you a LOT (well, at least, a lot for two people). Service can be a bit wonky. Service isn't spelled out by section, so you end up being served by a mix of the people working, some who are more personable than others. Prices are reasonable for the type of food and ambiance they're going for. Definitely worth it if you live closeby but don't want the same old "chain" foods.

Yea- tried this place again after about a year and a half and still not impressed. Only reason we went is because of the local deal coupon the husband wanted to buy. Won't be going back any time soon. Sushi was moderately priced for moderate sushi. Nothing impressive, not bad. I wanted a hot dish since it was a cold and rainy night- but had a hard time deciding, none of the chinese dishes looked very appealing. I wanted a meat/ vegetable dish like snow pea chicken or shrimp with string beans. Nothing like that on the menu at all. Most looked to be spicy or deep fried. Settled on garlic chicken- and it was average. Wish it tasted like garlic- if you put it in the title I want to taste it! Hate when there is as much celery in a dish as chicken. Daughter had pad thai- she liked it, but I had a taste and felt it had a strong vinegar flavor. We also ordered a fried rice for the table (see rice pet peeve below) and it was $8 of bland. I had to add soy sauce at the table. Appetizers weren't any better- crab wantons were a bit sweet. Tempura veggies over-battered, and I bit in to one and the batter was raw inside! My pet peeve about Asian restaurants was in place here- rice is very cheap- give it to me for FREE! $10 for barely average garlic chicken- no soup, no salad, no rice. That is overpriced to me. I also would have appreciated a 'bento box' style option for dinner- give me: choose one from row A- a smaller serving of chinese or japanese dish like broccoli beef, teryaki chicken, katsu etc. Row B- 3 pieces sashimi, california rolls, egg roll. Then add soup, salad and rice. Price reasonably- maybe $10 or $12.

Since I wasn't really a fan of the previous "Genghis Kahn" that it used to be, I was reluctant to try out the new "Genghix" in its place. Walked in & the decor is updated & much more appealing then the buffet style it used to be. My small family was seated at one of the round booth tables & I instantly felt like me & my 2 kids all needed booster seats (mind you, I'm pretty short). We ordered the Mango Delight (enjoyable, but nothing extraordinary), Won Ton Soup (extremely BLAND, not to mention I had to serve myself), Garlic Chicken (pretty good, would've hoped for more chicken then veggies), Garlic Spinach Noodles (pretty good, but I've had better). We also ordered one of the specialty rolls that had tempura flakes on top, but I cant remember what its called... the presentation of it was fantastic, but the taste was nothing special. For the price & service (umm, why did i have to serve my table after they just dumped the food at us??), I probably wouldn't go back, I'd take the 10 min drive to Naked Fish in Hayward. AND... not that I was expecting it, but some sort of cookie or candy when the bill came would've been nice.... at a sit down restaurant like this, you'd think SOMETHING comes with the large bill to say "thanks for spending your money for your mediocre meal"

Love this place! Haven't had a bad dish there. Worst I could say was that a couple of dishes were just ok, but nothing ever bad. The sushi is always excellent. I have a weakness for the Lion King roll: it's crab, avacado, eel, and salmon topped with caviar cooked and served warm, and it's *delicious*. Another yummy treat is the tilapia served with garlic spinach, black rice and mango chutney. The service is very good, too. One or two servers are, on occasion, strictly business, but never rude. Overall, the wait staff is very friendly and helpful. Desmond (sp?) is always very sweet to our young daughters. From the outside, the place looks completely unspectacular -- used to be a buffet. But the inside is warm and inviting, and it's spacious enough to be family friendly (kids can find ways to bump into anything within in arms reach... and ours do). It seems just a bit pricey, but I think that's mainly because it's in Castro Valley, and we just expect stuff to be cheap here. :-) One of the best places to dine in CV.

I discovered this place while working in Castro Valley and after the first taste of a lunch special, I made my way back for more. First time out I tried the mongolian beef and it was full of flavor. Had just the right spice, although it could have been spicier (Im a spice freak). The wait staff was very helpful and attentive and made for a good experience. I just recently went back with a friend and we had a good experience once again. She had some sushi and I tried the warrior chicken. I was a bit disappointed since it was listed as a spicy dish and I asked for it to be made even spicier but to no avail, it lacked some heat. Still delicious nonetheless and the sushi was pretty good as well. Not often can you get Chinese and Japanese food in the same place without it being a buffet or mall food court. Great selection of food on the menu and definitely worth a repeat visit.

I just happened upon this place looking for another restaurant and just loved it. I ordered the crab wonton for an appetizer and ordered a couple tuna sushi that was amazingly fresh. I had the tonkatsu for my main course. My date ordered the lamb and sweet-and-sour soup. The tonkatsu was great, but I sort of wish I had ordered the lamb. It was amazing. Service was friendly and quick. My only complaint (and it's a small one) is they don't really know how to cook mashed potatoes. A wonderful place I'll be going again

It gives me a chill walking into Genghix, like being transported from some bland CV parking lot to a rich atmosphere of Asian decor. The lighting sets a nice relaxing mood, and given the boring location, I'm glad there are things to look at inside and it's hard to see the outside reality, making you forgot for just a moment maybe your not dining in CV. I've been twice and both times the staff was great, making good recommendations on things to try. The hot/sour soup is good (large portion, a meal in itself), and the chicken chow fun and green beans are cooked perfect. My lemon chicken left me wanting more lemon, less sweet sugar. I tried the 'Oh My God Roll' based on the recommendation of other Yelpers but it didn't live up to the hype, kinda hard I guess given it's name. For CV, Genghix is a welcome addition to our small pool of good restaurants.

This review is for the lunch specials only. I'd like to give Genghix 3.5 stars as I had a pleasant lunch experience, but not quite a 4 star experience. Walked in on Monday for a late lunch around 2 PM, wasn't too busy but there were a few people in there. Genghix used to be a Chinese and Monogolian BBQ buffet called Genghis Khan a while ago. The interior is... interesting. The ceilings are quite low and there's a definite wooden/wicker theme to the place which makes it seem darker inside that it probably really is. Genghix bills itself as an Asian fusion restaurant but it's really a Chinese and sushi restaurant. Mom and I ordered two lunch specials, the vegetable beef and walnut chicken for $5.99 including salad and soup ($1 extra if you want brown rice instead of white rice). Service was quick and friendly, we got our soup and salad very quickly. The soup was something with tofu and imitation crab, the salad was mixed greens with a sweet dressing. The salad is actually decent sized portion. Onto the lunch specials. Vegetable beef - This was pretty good. There was a good amount of beef and it wasn't overly saucy or salty. Came with baby bok choy, celery, broccoli, carrots, mushroom, and water chestnuts. Walnut chicken - I would have ordered the walnut shrimp but I was having some skin problems and avoiding shrimp since I used to be allergic to it. Their variation of honey walnut shrimp/chicken seems to be a bit different from what you may find in other Chinese restaurants. The sauce isn't smothered all over, it's lightly drizzled and isn't your usual honey and mayo. I'm not sure what it was, but I think there needed to be more of it because the chicken by itself - while fried well - was a little plain. Okay sized portion, not quite enough glazed walnuts though. The presentation of the food was nice and elegant. Chinese food here isn't overly salty or saucy. For $5.99 the lunch specials aren't a bad deal (although I usually expect larger portions of rice), but it seems like the regular menu is a bit pricey. I'd be willing to come back for another lunch special, or maybe when I have a restaurant.com coupon. I have to say though that the staff was conversing quite loudly in the kitchen during the quiet of a 2 PM lunch. It didn't really bother me, but it was noticeable. Not sure if that's how they normally are. Overall, it was a clean Chinese food experience.

I only go for the Crunchy Chicken Salad. Over all its a decent place, its really basic to be honest. Looks nice inside and the staff are very nice.

I had a Groupon for Genghix, and we used with a few weeks ago with 2 of our friends for dinner. They had eaten here previously, so they recommended the place. Here is what we ordered: - Fire Balls (deep fried spicy salmon) - Mango Delight (fried basic, mango and spicy tuna) - Orange Scallops - Black Pepper Beef - Saba Shio-Yaki (lightly salted grilled mackerel) While the food was good, nothing really stood out as excellent. And for the prices we paid (even after the Groupon), I would not come back for dinner. They do offer some lunch specials, so I would come back for lunch.

My boyfriend and I frequent this place about once a month. We have never ever been disappointed with our meals. I'm the sushi fan, and he loves chinese food so we get the best of both worlds and we both leave VERY full. Prices are not "cheap" per say..they run about average(meaning a LARGE order of fried rice is between $7-9...sweet & sour chicken is $8) but the quality and quantity is top notch and we always leave with leftovers. The wait staff is always friendly and attentive...I've never had my water glass more than half empty....and the food is ready in no time, and at your table piping hot. Atmosphere is wonderful and it's very clean inside! Must try items include the Thai Fried Rice and the Honey Walnut prawns!

I was told by a friend this was a fusion of chinese and japanese food? I was very curious since I never really heard of that, I heard of chinese people owning japanese restaurant but not a combination of it. The design is pretty cool from the old school asian entrance door to the whole interior decor. Order few sushi rolls, and there not bad. I don't remember all the names since I don't yelp as I eat, (maybe i should huh) I remember I had the salmon sashimi which is not bad! pretty fresh and very enjoyable. Lion King - Not bad, the sauce is pretty good, but regardless how many sushi place i've been too I think the sushi house lion king is by far the ultimate best version. Crispy California Roll- fried very good! however, I think it is lacking some sauce to go with the deep fried california roll, in my opinion. Four season - not as good as I though, very nice looking roll and pretty, but not as good as I though. Service is great, very fast and very friendly, my tea and water were both filled the entire time as to all the guest of my party. Overall I like this place, I will for sure be back!

EXCELLENT! As a local I can't believe I have waited this long to go to this place. Went for lunch yesterday and I was super impressed with everything we ordered to sample. - The sushi was very fresh and so yummy - the Oh My God Roll was my FAVORITE! Additionally the Ahi Tuna Tar Tar Appetizer plate arrive looking beautiful and it was all very fresh and so tasty. The plating of all items we got wa amazing - very nice atmosphere in the restaurant and good quality service as well. We also ordered the miso fish on the appetizer side which was AMAZING - I would definately order this again - I could have had an entire plate of it. For dessert )we decided to splurge) and shared the Mango Mousse - it was very light and tasted like fresh mangos right off the trees in Hawaii. I highly recommend this place and know that I will become a regular now that I know how great it is :)

I've been to this place so many times I could drive there in my sleep! The food is delicious and the service is amazing. They are friendly, helpful, and very welcoming. Some really good dishes to get: - lamb chops (the side they give is also really good) - girly man (spicy but really good) - lion queen (if you like baked scallops, this is delicious) - lobster roll (10 yummy pieces and it's also really nicely decorated with a lobster tail at the end) - sashimi platter (it's so fresh!) - Chilean sea bass (SO GOOD!!) I don't understand why this place doesn't have more raving reviews. It's honestly a blessing to have it in Castro Valley; there are almost no good restaurants in the area and this one is great for hosting people. Also, if you have a lot of guests, you can even reserve the private room. It only has a dollar value minimum and they are always so kind and accomodating.

As promised, I got around to trying the sashimi on a lunch special and it was fresh and tender. I was very pleased with the lunch combo selections that are offered. Not only were they decently priced but it also allowed the opportunity to sample, not only the sashimi, but a Spicy Tuna roll and others. My dining partner, aka my hubby, let me sample his Salmon Teriyaki and it was surprising good. The sauce was light and didn't overwhelm the grilled salmon flavor. I still had to ask for the low sodium, green top soy sauce. This should be an essential item included on every table. Will return for lunch again very soon.

I remembered when this place was a Chinese / Sushi buffet. The sushi wasn't that great, but the food selection was pretty good. I need to return to see how the restaurant has changed. Stay tuned for a review update!

I am currently review this place while still waiting for my food. Horrible and slow service. We had a reservation at 6, we were seated at 6:30 after ignoring us for about 10min. It is now 7:10 and I have water and tea in front if me. I would not come here again!

I am not joking when I say I think I just ate the best meal of my life! I have been to Genghix many times. But tonight was AMAZING. We ate (as I always do) the fabulous tuna tartare, which is presented on a long, beautiful glass plate. This decadent mound of spicy sashimi has a layer of avocado and wakame in the middle, and comes covered in delicate roe and accompanied by rice crackers. So good. The garlic spinach is one of my faves, too. But tonight . . . the most amazing thing of all--Exotic Bomba! OMG, who on earth created this incredible confection? Passion fruit, mango, and raspberry sorbet, covered with a hard white chocolate shell and drizzled with dark chocolate sauce. Are you kidding? All this, plus Pad Thai, two orders of soup, and a sapporo: $56. Stop reading. GO.

Came here for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The interiors are really nice and beautifully decorated. My only quibble is that the acoustics aren't pretty good -- sounds kind of echo, so with all the people's conversations it can get pretty loud in there. We were seated and served fairly quickly. Ordered a chicken teriyaki bento bowl and honey walnut shrimp. There was hecka stuff in that bento bowl! It had the chicken, rice, a salad, and a couple different kinds of sushi. And of course it came with miso soup. The chicken was well cooked, but not overdone, and the sauce was great but did not overpower. The honey walnut shrimp was really great too. Light and well-flavored, and not covered with flour as some places make them. And oh, I had more than the four pieces or so you'd get elsewhere. =P We were starving, and all told we were in there for about half an hour. Pretty impressive. I wanted to try their desserts, but I was running out of time and stomach space, so I'll save that for later. And all that for the amazing price of $15 for two people! I'm definitely a fan.

I LOVE this place period! We ordered the oh my god roll, the spider roll, tempura vegetables, honey walnut prawns, house salad, maguro tuna, and amaebi. We had leftovers that day. The service this time was excellent they had our food to us faster than on any previous visit. Maybe because they had 4 chefs in the kitchen! The waitress was definitely new and a little nervous. But overall it was great =-)

The place is now Japanese, Thai, and Chinese cuisines and no longer a buffet!!! Thank goodness!!! The new owner's even changed the inside of the place. It's really good food! The sashimi is fresh and the pieces are cut thick. Actually all of the portions of food here are a good size. I would recommend: house salad( I like the dressing...different than other japanese restaurants), sake/hamachi sashimi, chicken chow mein, genghix fried rice

My experience at Genghix was mediocre. I went right at opening around 11 and had no trouble getting seated. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice. Lovely decorated and lots of room. It must have a great ambiance in the evening. Based off looks its very welcoming from the outside. I ordered a salad with their house dressing and the oh my god roll. both were wry tasty! Had me saying "oh my god" with every bite. I might have to go along with most of the other yelpers and recommend this roll. The salad was a great starter. The dressing made the salad spectacular. It was still a big portion for a starter dish but I almost wanted one of those olive garden status bowls haha it was that good. Service would have just been good if it were not for one the server assistance who basically was very good making sure EVERY TABLE (about 5-6) was doing fine and always had their glasses filled. I swear as soon as I took a sip and set it down she filled it up again. And that's not even the kicker. Usually when servers do that they're loud and very obvious about but not her. She was very quiet and respected the conversation being held at the tables. She was very good and on top of it! The reason why I've given this place 3 stars was because the other servers mainly. The pricing was medium to medium high but you pay for a nice environment. Back to the other servers... They didn't do anything besides take orders. I recall only seeing our main server once when she had to take the order. The other times the super server assistant brought our food up and tool dirty dishes and everything. There were at least 4-5 other server doing nothing standing watching her do everything. Pathetic!! It's a team effort guys! Help each other out! That pissed me off knowing they just let her do most of the work. Definitely minus 2 stars worth. But a definite 5 stars to that girl who did everything. Wonderful job I would love l have a worker like that!

From the outside Genghix looks kind of silly like a coffee shop turned Asian. Surprisingly the owners made the inside work by their choice of decor. It didn't feel like a coffee shop inside. I especially liked the large statues & lanterns. +1 Star for ambiance. -1 Star because I am visibly pregnant & there were plenty of booths available but they put us in hard wooden chairs. Not good for a pregnant woman's back. I was seated right under a fan & was so cold I had to order tea just to heat up. The tea set our server brought to the table was authentic & adorable but the cup was not practical. It was so hot to touch that I couldn't even pick up the cup till after I ate my meal when I ordered the tea prior to ordering my entree. -1 Star for the walnut prawns. The photo looked like they weren't fried & they were. Plus the sauce was too mayonnaissey for my tastes. I didn't enjoy feeling fatter as I ate my fried meal w/ lard sauce. It actually grossed me out. Plus the broccoli that comes with it is raw & cold. Ew! +1 Star for the wok fried green beans. These were amazing & I was so glad I ordered this as I happily ate this for most of my entree. +1 Star for the duck confit that my husband ordered. The presentation on this dish was well thought out & the sauce was very good. The duck was fatty (but this place is not high end so what can you expect). My husband raved about it as he ate. I am glad one of us enjoyed our meals. Overall, I give the place a 2, my husband a 4 so it is a 3 as a combo of our opinions.

This is out GoTo restaurant in Castro Valley. A lot of great dishes and the service is awesome. Lucky it's only 1/2 mile from our home. Ghengix Roll is delicious. And the Salted Caramel Gelato is a must when they have it. They can also be found on Restaurant.com and FiveStars. Enjoy!

It's no 5 star sushi joint, the atmosphere's nice and clean, nothing crazy modern and unique, but still good vibe. The sushi chef's are always very nice and knowledgable and make sitting at the bar a pleasant experience. I've only ever ordered sushi here and it never disappoints. Also, servings are nice and large so you don't have to order a million rolls.

Tonight, my dad gave me the choice of this place or a steak house.. I'm thinking I should have picked the steak house. I was excited about this place because of the HUGE menu, soooo mannyyy optionnssss For starters we got: salt and pepper mushrooms (good, came with a garlicky dipping sauce) and flaming scallops (really good, and actually came flaming!) My mom got the fried pork with veggies and mashed potatoes(thin piece of pork, no seasoning, mashed potatoes were a fail and veggies were just steamed, not even any salt and pepper!). My dad got beef Cantonese chow fun (plus: lots of beef. but no flavor!) I got sushi: the girly man and rainbow roll (both good, probably the best of the three things we got) Overall: it was ok, but we probably won't be going back. I don't really understand "asian fusion" i felt like it was trying to be high end, but just came out bland. If you go, try the appetizers and definitely do the sushi.

Ever since naked fish in Hayward burned down (mother claims no responsibility but I know it was her, the heifer!) It's been ever so difficult to find fresh dead fish in my neck of the woods. Well no more yelp friends, for Genghix is here! I was taken aback by the beautifully decorated but dungeon-like lighting inside upon entering (It brings up memories from whence mother locked me up in the dungeon for a week because I laughed at her flatulence during our weekly bridge tournament). Aside from the PTSD flashback, it's very nice inside. The menu reads like a novel. Good thing they have lots of pictures in there too because I can't read. I ordered the Pokemon salad, mainly because it was called a Pokemon salad and I've always wanted to try fresh Pokemon. After eating it, I can see why team rocket wants to catch 'em all, they are friggin delicious! Pikachu especially but I digress... Next up was the flaming scallops. Ok, no one told me the plate was going to be ON FIRE! Someone please tell the chef to review his quality control practices, but aside from that, the scallops were also friggin delicious! 2 for 2 Ganghix, so far so good. Next up were some spicy salmon rolls, good but missing the wow factor of the Pokemons. Mother says she doesn't trust anything that isn't cooked but mother was also alive during the civil war so her rants are taken with a grain of salt. We had one more item but I can't remember its name because i had something called 'beer' which made my brain feel fuzzy. Jalapeno scallops were good too, way better than the cat food mother feeds me. How can I go back to that and mothers drivel stew? Mother says taste buds are not for activating, pleasure is forbidden, but I rather enjoy tasting flavors. I hate you mother! Anywho, all told, me and my man-date spent around 80 bucks for the meal. Good, considering how much we ordered but how on earth will I pay for all that food? I guess I'll have to scrub mothers back extra well this week.

Yummy Asian fusion food, decent prices, and a lovely dark with soft light atmosphere make this a perfect dinner spot! Gorgeous, flavorful sushi, generous portions of chow mein, seafood, and delightful desserts make this a 4 star for me. I've lived in Castro Valley for years and always drove past this restaurant because from the outside it seems totally unassuming and not very special. So glad that a mom's group planned a night out with Genghix as its host. I would definitely recommend it for locals and I think I'd even tell folks that it's worth the drive to eat here.

Giving this place 3 stars, my boyfriend loved it, however I was super disappointed. We came here after a hike around 3pm on a Friday. As soon as we sat down we were rushed. I asked the guy if I can get some more time and he told me no, he needed to put in the order now. I was a bit confused because doesn't show they closed at lunch time. Anywho, we got the food really quick. I got the bento, my boyfriend love the teriyaki chicken, I however thought it was VERY salty. The sushi was good though. Overall; I was just really turned off how much they rushed us.

If your looking for sushi that costs way too much for their quality, you should hit this place up. But if your looking for some kick ass sushi, the freeway and Bart are pretty close by. I came here one day because of the good reviews and it was just nasty. I dont remember the rolls i got though but trust me it wasn't worth it. Now if your looking for the best sushi on the planet ( or at least in the Bay) try Amakara in Dublin, nice people and hecka good sushi and sashimi

Love this place. We're fairly new to the area and wanted some good Asian fusion. We found this through reviews on yelp and were not dissapointed. To be quiet honest there better plates are Asian dishes. I'm a big fan of specialty rolls but they were just ok here. Prices are a bit high for sushi and not really worth it. Everyone must try the jalapeño appetizer! OMG spicy but incredible . If your looking for specialty sushi, go elsewhere, but it's some good Asian fusion ! Plus yr service is incredible. There's never a really long wait and the servers and water boys are super attentive!

service is fast but a little too fast. I wasn't done with my plate and the server just picked if up to clean up.the guy server was much more friendlier then the girls. some of these girl need to get off their rags and do their job. I felt rushed to eat and get out. okay fine I can take a hint the food was not worth raving about. sushi rolls was pretty to look at. Asian fusion is another way of saying I can't cook real Asian food so I throw things together and try to make it taste like Asian food. good thing sushi is raw fish. no cooking there.

The service was not that attentive. They seemed rushed at the place, wasnt busy at all. They're was really, like really, no chicken in our warrior chicken plate; just a bunch of fried dough in their sweet orange glaze. Not good at all. BUT the black pepper chicken kicked some good taste buds and the shrimp fried rice was mediocre. For the appetizer, I would recommend the sea bass-- yummy for a starter. Overall, decent for expensive Chinese fusion places.

Genghix is great!! I've been going their since they opened/changed-hands. I love their fantastic fusion of Japanese, Chinese, and Thai! offerings! Their succulent sushi is so savory, especially the "Chef's Specials". I often order the Four Seasons, Girly Man, Oh My God, Dragon, Fire Balls, and Lion King; there are many more I'm eager to enjoy! Also, I love the Bouncing Filet Mignon, Pad Thai, Kung Pao Chicken, Garlic Green Beans, Roasted Eggplant, Calamari, healthy brown rice, and delightfully refreshing desserts, like limonciello sorbet and vanilla sorbet with berries. The service is fast and friendly, and their prices are extremely reasonable. Who ever heard of a scrumptious appetizer salad with heavenly homemade dressing for $2?! Their menu is extensive with mouth watering photos, and you'll have to think of Genhix as like The Cheesecake Factory - way too many choices, but fortunately you can't go wrong. Good tip: this excellent eatery is on restaurantdotcom so take advantage!! Genghix also offers a text messaging list of dining discounts.

I came here for linner (lunch/dinner) with my parents before they had to take off to an event the other day. There was one other table seated when we arrived, so we were taken care of immediately. Waters were served and menus were distributed. I haven't been here since they changed from an all-you-can-eat buffet at least 5 years ago. We ordered a lot of food: 9 piece salmon sashimi, walnut shrimp, pad thai, XO shrimp and scallop, and the wok tossed mixed vegetables. My sister also ordered a cup of the won ton soup. The sashimi came out first and was presented beautifully! It also tasted pretty fresh. The walnut shrimp was okay, but I've had better. The shrimp were definitely plump, but the sauce really didn't have a to-die-for flavor that I'm used to (especially if I'm going to indulge in that deep fried fattiness covered in mayo). The XO shrimp and scallop was also just okay. It was supposed to be spicy, but definitely lacked that kick. I passed on the mixed vegetables because it looked like the same as the veggies that came with the XO shrimp and scallop. The pad thai came out last and definitely disappointed. It looked like pad thai, but did not taste like it. Now that I think of it, it was lacking that entire peanut sauce aspect! It also was not spicy at all like the menu indicated! I'm not sure how my sister's won ton soup was, but she finished it all. The service was excellent and I really enjoyed the sashimi. It's really unfortunate that the rest of the food didn't deliver in taste. From my sister's stories of her previous visit several months ago, she said that there was a vermicelli dish that was really good, so maybe the menu is just hit or miss and we just missed a lot?? Bonus points for service: we had a $30 for $15 groupon that we failed to show when we were seated, but they didn't make a big deal about it (it does make a difference when they ring up your orders because it shows up differently).

I came here for the first time for a birthday party, big group, which they were kind enough to split the checks for certain people. The waitresses were nice and friendly especially since we were pretty loud. The inside is pretty nice, clean, and spacious. It has a lot of sitting area, but does fill up quickly. On the outside it may look dead but it's usually not, but I've only been twice so I'm speaking in those two times. The food is good, the first time I ordered terriyaki chicken with rice, which was amazingly good along with the Philly roll. It was all fresh and had no complaints . The second time I had California rolls and avocado rolls. The rolls were pretty small for the price, which was more than Rays Sushi in Hayward. Though I wish they were bigger portioned, it's a good local place to have some sushi.

First time at this restaurant. The company was great, but the food was just ok. I had a glass of rheisling, an order of gyoza, a bowl of hot & sour soup, & an order of chicken chow fun. The only thing I really liked was the rheisling & the gyoza. The hot & sour soup lacked flavor & the chicken chow fun was dry & didn't have much flavor either. Not sure if I'll give this restaurant another.chance.

What a lunch treat this place was.. (a friend took me for my birthday) and boy did I enjoy the extensive menu this place offers. I will definitely be back again, only I'll have to get there earlier. We enjoyed ourselves and cant wait to come back to try other entrees. My only issue is They close at 3pm!!

This place is hands down one of my favorite sushi places to go to in the bay area, outside of the pricing which is a little bit on the expensive side, i love everything else about this restaurant. The feel / design of the restaurant is great, and the music is calm and chill very fitting. Ive been coming here for a while now, and well we always have to get the OMG roll just because its hands down my favorite roll i have ever had, i've tried many sushi restaurants and i have never encountered a roll that was this amazing. This roll is pretty much orgasmic, such a sick mix of flavors its great! Their house salad is also another must try specially for the cheap price, and now since they renovated their menu they have so much to offer and it is really good. Also the chefs add their little touch to the rolls with their unique designs its always exciting to see. Most of the staff are pretty friendly and courteous! I gave it a 5 because well... its definitely better than a 4 , i would probably put it at 4.5 for sushi restaurants but its definitely better than a 4. This place is simply great!

I've tried this place quite a few times hoping they will get better, but nope. Last time was the last when I almost choked on a fish bone in my sushi. Waitress barely said anything about it she did take the order off our receipt without having to ask though so that was good. I really wanted to like this place since there isn't a lot of options in this damn town.

When I crave sushi, but my wife craves Chinese, there is no other place we prefer than Genghix. Great sushi and great Chinese food. Always happy with the food and service.

This place was nicely decorated and clean. Went their for lunch. I guess we were pretty hungry so we ordered 2 lunch specials and 3 rolls. The rolls were presented beautifully and the fried rice was ok. We were surprised to see our bill come in at $75!!! I'm not sure we will be going back anytime soon.

When my boyfriend and I lived in Castro Valley, we went here SEVERAL times. At fist I was skeptical because I had no idea what an "Asian Fusion" restaurant was. But I found out that they offered a wide selection of tasty sushi rolls and other Asian dishes. The spicy-crunchy roll and regular crunchy roll are our favorite! The wok tossed garlic string beans and tempura appetizer are also yummy! Every dining experience we had there was positive, the food was fantastic, and the staff were friendly and pleasant. Overall, I would highly recommend this place.

Pretty good food and service. One dish was horrible and it was the most expensive dish we picked out for the night. Their filet minion. One word for that.. Gross

For years I've driven by this place and this Sunday, thanks to a little purchase from Groupon, I finally got to eat here. With me were the usual suspects, da hubby, my daughter and my very picky son. We were greeted and seated immediately. It took a bit longer for us to be acknowledged at our table, but that was okay because it gave us time to look over their very extensive menu of "Asian Fusion". What is "Asian Fusion"? At Genghix I believe it is merging of Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese Food, which works perfectly when you have a daughter that loves sushi and a son that is super picky. We ordered a miso soup and chicken fried rice for the boy, which was typical to what you would find in any chinese restaurant. We also ordered the Pokemon Salad. I was really glad that the hubby ordered this. It was similar to a Hawaiian Poke with avocado, mango and tuna in a spicy yet sweet dressing. Delish! The Zen Roll was my second favorite. Fried Eel, Avocado, Cream Cheese,Tobiko, Crab Meat, Seaweed Seasoning. It was truly delicious and quite large! We also ordered the Oakland A's Roll. Soft Shell Crab, Avocado, Crab, and Eel. It was quite similar to the Spider Roll we order from our favorite sushi spot. My least favorite was the Home Sweet Home. Fried Salmon, Cream Cheese, Avocado, Shiso, Salmon, Ume Paste. The combo of the creamy with the sourness of the Ume Paste was just a little weird for my liking. All in all it was an excellent dinner and a great find on Groupon.com .

I went there with my family this weekend from a recommendation and found the dining experience very enjoyable. First the food: Everything was very tasty and nicely presented. The sushi called "oh my god"(yes, that's the name) was very good. Keep in mind. It is a spicy hot susi(has Japleno pepper on it) but not enough to do damage your taste bud. Magnolian beef was good. Its not very saucy, just the way I like it. Salt and pepper fried scallp is a nice dish. Seafood crispy noodle tasted very good. Chicken lettuce wrap tasted pretty good. Only minor issue is not enough lettuce. But if you ask for more, they'll give it to you. We pretty much ate everything(about 10 different dish) and being a critic of Asian food, I can't complain much about their food at all. The incredients they used were very fresh which was one of the things I looked for. Service: They weren't busy when we went so they were attentive to our needs. They were very speedy when you request something. The restauraunt design was nice. The only minor issue i have is certain areas appear to be too dark. If you have 6 or more people, there is a automatic 15% tips for service, no big deal, just a heads up. I give it a 4.5 stars. Happy dining, folks!

I grew up in Castro Valley and really the only places to eat out were fast food. It is nice to know that I now have an alternative. The ambiance is nice although sitting in a booth makes you feel really short (high tables). My mom used a booster to get closer to the table. -shrimp tempura roll which was better than expected -ceviche had a unique flavor, would not order again -garlic chicken was okay -thai basil pork was spicy yet sweet -garlic noodles, yum Overall the food was good and I would go back. I think I would try some new things.

Great service and very well priced for a cozy atmosphere. My recommendations are the sea bass, sashimi salad, chicken stir fry, five spice duck, and crispy seafood noodles. What I didn't like as much was their salmon teriyaki and walnut shrimp, but other than that I really enjoy going to this place! The restaurant is nicely decorated and the place and food is clean and fresh. I'm going back to try the other dishes until I can narrow down what I like most.

Okay so we went back and had another round of bad service. The food is good, they are very slow in bringing things out. The timing was off again, main course items came out throughout the meal and by the time some of the food came out, we didn't even want it anymore. Also, we had to wait a long time for them to bring the bill, and then it took forever for them to run the card. All in all, the food is good, but I really would like it if they got it together on the service end.

Was really into this place for a while, my co-workers and I would go here 1-2 times per week. But 2 times I found small bugs in my salad and when I told them they just took it away. Not even an apology or a discount, comp, something. Bad business practice. Too bad. Service can make all the difference.

I love this place. They redid the inside and it looks really nice. The service is great, takes a little time to get the check, but the food service is fast. Prices are really good and the fish is fresh. Better than the place in the village by far. Haven't found a disappointing thing on the menu yet!

I was pleasantly surprised this weekend when I walked into what was previously known as Genghis Khan Buffet and discovered it was converted into a sit down Chinese/Japanese restaurant. Although I was disappointed that I would not be able to partake in a gluttonous food free for all I was interested to try the many dishes in the extensive menu. They have everything from chow mein and walnut prawns to a long list of new and interesting sushi rolls. I love the fact that you can have traditional as well as more exotic Chinese dishes and enjoy a couple of yummy sushi rolls all in the same restaurant. A Chinese/Japanese combination is always a winner in my book! The new decor is quite a departure from the dated ambiance of GKB. It is a bit dark and it feels as though the decor was heavily influenced by the look of P. F. Chang's especially with the two life-size Terra Cotta Soldiers in the middle of the restaurant. The look definitely works and I have recently heard that a full sushi bar was going to be installed which should brighten up the space. I must also commend our server for the night, I believe his name was Darren. Not only was he attentive to our large party and continuously kept our teapots and glasses of water full but he was very helpful and informative. It was difficult to decide what to order from the large menu and he suggested some really great dishes and sushi rolls. My overall experience was great and I will definitely be back to try more!

I'm not sure Castro Valley has the demographics to support the sort of dimly lit, prosaic muddled fusion food with upscale pretensions and hipster all-black wait staff, but food is generally decent tho overpriced. The lunch combo with miso, teriyaki, CA roll, salad, rice, and couple of fried sushi bites at $8 however is excellent value. 7664

Really looks great after the remodel. The owner told us that everything was shipped over from China! Authentic as it gets. I tried the Chinese dishes and they were great. I can't wait to go back and try the other pan-asian food choices.

It's kinda cool that you can order sushi and chow mein at the same time in one restaurant. We went to Genghix twice and ordered a wide variety of dishes from the menu to try. The food was a little bit too sweet for me, but it wasn't bad. I haven't decided if I would go back again.

I have passed this place dozens of times. Planning a lunch with a coworker and thought to give this place a try. Arrived a little before noon on a weekday. From the outside it doesn't look like much. The interior makes up for it. Nicely decorated, tons of seating and a sushi bar. The menu is a mile long. Page after page with pictures and descriptions. They have sushi rolls, Chinese, Asian fusion and sashimi. A guarantee that everyone will find something to feast on. I ordered the Singapore vermicelli that normally comes with pork and shrimp. I substituted the pork for chicken. The food took about 15 minutes. My mountain of noodles arrived steaming hot. It was suppose to be spicy according to the little flame on the menu but wasn't. It was good with the huge pieces of chicken and few shrimp along with the grilled peppers and onion. It wasn't greasy. The portion is enough for two meals or to share. Service was okay by the staff, refilling our waters, clearing plates and boxing up the left overs. Not friendly but got the job done so I can't complain. Prices are reasonable. Ingredients are fresh and portions are generous. The place got pretty busy during the lunch rush. Parking is plentiful but can be difficult during peak lunch time due to the other local businesses.

My kids hated the place. ..not a real American type kid friendly menu as would be expected with this type of cuisine. At any rate I typically do not eat much Chinese food either, although I do like many dishes. This place is just ok to me. Staff... Friendly people, inside relatively nice& kinda dark...probably ok for a date night. Expense @ average I guess. Lots of spicy dishes if you dig that sort of thing.

I got the genghix roll & 49er roll. I like mixing up complicated rolls with simpler ones haha. The 49er is a cucumber an avocado roll topped with salmon and a small slice of lemon. The Genghix Roll is AMAZING. It is so flavorful! There's shrimp tempura on the inside and the roll is topped with lobster, avocado & tobiko/flying fish roe. The roe gives it great texture-the little bit of crunch, yum!! The lobster has an incredible natural sweetness! Sounds like the Genghix Roll is my new favorite!

Rotten fish = 1 star (at most). My husband and I came here for dinner and we were terribly disappointed. The horrific sushi caused immediate gag reflex and we ended up turning back our sushi plate. We just left the restaurant so hopefully we didn't catch hepatitis B from this meal. It's also double the cost of middle-range sushi/Chinese restaurant but nearly half as good. Never coming here again.

Ambiance: It has a dark lighting atmosphere. But don't worry, its not super dark where you can't see your hands and feet. It has an ancient Chinese Xi'an culture feel with the large heavy double wooden doors for entrance and metal (terra-cotta-looking) soldiers. Fun fun fun. Restaurant is spacious and clean~! Lots of seating! :) Service: Our server was amazing! He was very attentive to us and kind. Our food came out in record time. Cup were always filled with tea and water. Food: - Genghix Fried Rice (Dried scallop and egg white fried rice): MY FAVORITE DISH OF ALL TIMES AT GENGHIX! ...and most Chinese sit-down restaurants. It was cooked to perfection with delicious savory flavors~ It didn't come out overly oily or salty like most Chinese restaurants. It's just perfect. Please go and try it yelpers! :) I'm giving this restaurant five stars for this dish (and because of the service). :P - Wok-fried mixed vegetables: Decent. Lots of broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, celery, etc etc doused in some typical Chinese sauce. Wished they took out the mushrooms because it just did not go. .___. Price: ~$20 for two dishes Tip: - GET THE GENGHIX FRIED RICE! Conclusion: I would come back here just for the Genghix Fried Rice.

I was around the area and I thought oh hey a Mongolian restaurant cos how it sounds, found out its Asian Fusion. Great ambience, nice deco, foodwise: horrible. Crab Wantons: was ok, could be more crunchy and would taste even better. Tom Yam Goong: spicy, less flavorful. 3pc of overcooked shrimps and mushrooms. Lots of onions. Walnut Shrimps: Overpriced, some sour sauce with mayo which is pathetic. Home Sweet Home sushi: def nasty with some sour sauce. Hate it. Eel over rice bowl. Again with some sour sauce! Seriously are they using some expired sauce? Looked at the dessert menu, nothing Asian except for the ice cream flavors. For such horrible food and pricey menu, I really wouldnt recommend to be wowed at their nice ambient.

About a year ago, my boyfriend took us on our very first date. He already picked out where we were going and what we'd be doing. He surprised me by coming her for dinner first. GOOD CHOICE! I am always down for some good sushi and hot tea. The food came fairly quickly which was great. Who likes to wait so long for food anyways? So, that was really nice. Had a few brews and dessert. Ever since our first date, we've been loyal customers. Seriously a great place for all occasions - dates, family, friends, etc.

Genghix in one of my daughter's favorite fusion restaurants. Evenings are usually packed, but at lunch time you can zoom in and zoom right out if you wish. The lunch specials are awesome and the prices. It's a nice vibe, clean & friendly.

I have no idea why this place doesn't have 5 stars. It's my favorite sushi joint ever. Everything is great and for a fusion place it's awesome. The four seasons and the big kahuna are the best rolls. I had the lobster roll recently and it's really good. Chin the owner is really cool too. I can't wait to have sushi here again. Lunch is awesome too.

We eat here at least twice a month. The service is always quick and the staff are friendly and helpful. A couple of the guys were bus boys and are now waiters, nice to see a business promote within. Food is always fresh, tasty and it's always fun to see the presentations of the food. Some of our favorites are the dragon roll, 18 piece sashimi, seaweed salad, 49er roll, land won ton soup. If we have any suggestions it would be to expand their wine list. It's limited.

  • Scott B.

Genghix is very unique in itself. They serve Chinese food as a restaurant, and also serve Sushi. I been here twice, and feel neutral. The first time I went the sushi was really really good, and the second time I was not a fan. BUT I did order Chinese food the second time, and that was really good. SOOOO after reading this and being confused like myself, I just wish that BOTH the chinese food and the sushi would be consistent enough to say that they are great!

The food is definitely Asian FUSION. It's not terrible but it's not real Asian food. I would only come here because it's close by and the sushi is fresh. The service is terrible after you become a regular. The waiters are sassy and they forget your orders a lot. Would not recommend.

I've been going to Gengix for many years and it's always the same: good food but poor service. Be prepared to wait on a Saturday evening. My favorite dish is "Oh my Gosh" Try it if you like spicy Sushi.

Asian Fusion that's modern in style with dark lighting and plenty of seating. Chinese/Japanese fusion with waiters and waitresses that are Chinese, and customers of all nationalities, more so white than Asian. Price - more on the pricey side, a small roll of Lion Queen was $12. But it did have crab, eel, and scallops topped with cavier, where most places don't include eel. And it was quite delicious. (4 stars) yelp.com/biz_photos/sRy8… Flaming Scallops was also really good, coming out in flames and served with scallops and enoki mushrooms that's baked. Mmm (4 stars) yelp.com/biz_photos/sRy8… We also ordered Lettuce Cups that only came in 4 pieces of lettuce. It was good (3 stars). Their lunch special seems to be what's the steal, where it's $6.99 Mon-Fri and $8 weekends, where it's the usual Bento Boxes that include tempera + teriyaki meat with a side of rice, salad, and miso soup. It also came with 2 takoyaki. I did like how there were pictures for almost everything on the menu, even when the menu had so many foods to choose from! OVERALL: Food - 3.5 stars Ambiance - Modern, Nice Price - Average Service - Average I'd come here for a special occasion for their nice atmosphere, but not regularly only because there are other places we could go for bigger portions for the same or even cheaper price.

Friendly staff and good service. It's a bit pricey. What's unique about this place is you can order from Thai, Chinese, to Japanese. Your party gets a totally mix Asian Fusion. The Four Season Sushi is very decorative and tasteful where you dip the roll in different layers of sauce. Very creative.

Classy, fresh, made to order, sophisticated Asian infused restaurant with honest, prompt, friendly service. Offering BOTH Chinese and Japanese dishes at an upper scale type of environment this place is sure to please. Perfect for posh sushi lovers but also nice for those that are really into creative maki rolls or fresh & hot Chinese cuisine plates as the menu offers a wide variety of stylish choices to pick from at either end. A fabulous place to take a lunch date or someone you're looking to impress. Dinner meal costs are a little pricey but this restaurant still delivers a delicious and esquisite experience all the way around.

I wanted sushi and decided to come here because i remembered how good it was the last time i came here which was about 3-4 months ago. But they definitely have changed since then. First of all, our food took very long to arrive. And i was confused since the place was not busy at all. But being a waitress myself, i totally understand. Maybe they had alot of togo orders. We ordered 2 bento boxes with beef teriyaki and tempura, and beef teriyaki and california rolls. The california rolls were good. The beef could've been better. It was very tough. The tempura my friend got was good, but they had alot of "double everything." She got one shrimp, broccoli, 1 carrot, 2 taros, and 2 sweet potatoes. We also ordered a lion king which was disappointing. The roll was stuck to the aluminum foil and when we tried to pick it up, it fell apart completely. It was also poorly cut and poorly rolled. We had to use a spoon to grab and eat the roll. The best thing about this place is their sashimi. We had an order of butterfish white tuna, and that was really good. Overall, i wouldn't be back. I can go somewhere else that's cheaper and better food.

Unfortunately I've been here several times and each experience was mediocre at best. Our last 2 visits really sealed the deal and guarantees we'll never go back. We've tried most of the menu ranging from large family dinners to weekend bento box lunches. This place keeps serving burnt tempura. A plain bowl of udon for my kids costs $10. When I addressed the burnt tempura, they did nothing about it. I didn't bother eating it. Typically, a decent restaurant would remove the item from the bill, especially when the patron doesn't touch the food. But not this place. Be warned, food is mediocre at best and over priced.

I came in here for lunch and I can't complain about the service my server was Drew and he seemed pleasant, hence the 2 stars, but if the service sucked, I'd give it a 1 star rating. I am very particular about my sushi and this place seemed more trendy with the sushi menu so I stayed simple with the crab salad as a starter and order from their lunch menu, the Mongolian chicken, which I figured was a "can't go wrong" dish. In contrast, I was very disappointed because the crab salad lacked crab.....I mean, I have been to many fusion restaurants, sushi restaurants and so forth and the crab salad was just that, crab. However, their crab salad was mainly romaine lettuce and shredded bits of crab with fish eggs on top. The presentation was nice, but my expectations for a crab salad is mainly what I ordered crab mixed with some lettuce, not the other way around. The Mongolian chicken was worse. It lacked flavor, you can tell the that chicken is obviously boiled before they put it in the wok, which leads to a rubbery and less appetizing texture of meat. The dish in itself lacked the robust flavor that Mongolian chicken should contain, but was covered with a tremendous amount of onions and bell peppers. I would not return based on the food, however I have to say their sake was probably the best part of the meal. I ordered a hot saki to sip on, and it was very good.

This place is very good. Genghix is probably one of the couple good restaurants in Castro Valley. Their lunch specials are a complete steal. You can get miso soup, salad, sashimi and salmon teriyaki for only 9 bucks. Holy moly... Went here today afterschool with my parents. Genghix was super busy, but we able to find a seat in a minute or two. Ordered the 6 piece assorted sushi and california lunch special. Took a while for it to come out because of the business. The assorted sushi contained tuna, salmon, and a couple white fleshed fish, hamachi was one of them. All of it was super fresh and really really good. Really good sashimi. The california rolls were also excellent. The miso soup was kinda lukewarm, but the salad was pretty good. 5/5 just come for the lunch specials and get sashimi.

I've been here about 7-8 times, and each time I am impressed with the service and quality of food. If you enjoy sushi, this is the place to go to! The staff is extremely tentative and are on top of the busy demands of their customers. Also, the owners play a very active roll and make all of their clients feel like family. I have been to several sushi restaurants, and this is the only place that is consistent with high quality and generous portions. Keep up the good work!

Chinese and Japanese foods ? This is what it called fusion nowadays ? CRAZY !! Never been to a place that I can order Chinese food and sushi at the same time. I mean, it might for so people that crave for honey walnut prawns while eating sashimi! LOL!! I decided to still holla at the sushi and didn't try to order the Chinese food here I ordered couple of the expensive rolls. Presentation was pretty good... But at $16 per roll... HOLY !! I didn't think it worth it tho Services were fantastic!! I would give 6 stars if I can for those cute little boys that serving those tables. Cup always fill and plates were taking off our table!! Left a FAT Tips Anyways... I would be back for the service but the food is too expensive for the quality. Maybe when I hit up some $$$$ @ the casino... I switch back to my nice looking waiters !! HOLLA !!

The prices are kind of high but it is truly worth it. This is the best place Ive been to in a while. I usually dont eat appetizers at all because I dont want to get full but their soup and salad is to die for!! Ive never happily eaten salad before I dont know what kind of dressing it is but it is sooo yummy. Their service is always fast, and the food is always delicious. I am always excited when I plan to go here for lunch

Best sushi I have had in a long time, hands down. I used to live in Castro Valley and it wasn't there then. After I move out, they move in so now I make a 30 minute trip for it. And hey it's totally worth it. My personal favorite is the Dragon Roll. It's Ginormous!!!!! We also ordered the Lion King and Lion Queen. All were served warm. I recommend for all to try. The Dragon roll is a masterpiece, I almost didn't want to eat it. Lol. I also ordered miso soup and it was a great way to begin a meal. Service here was very good by the way!

Soo, of course with the way the building looks it's going to be a little gimmicky and that's cool. But I guess based on reviews I expected a little more restaurant and quality a little less buy this buy that advertising inside. Needless to say it was straight up expensive and tacky. First of all the floor was so sticky my sandals were sticking to it so eww, I wish I would have left then. Next, you'd expect that with what they charge for food, and how the tv's they have in the restaurant do nothing but advertise and show pictures of catering events..well..you'd expect they'd be able to afford some upholstery on their seats. The booths we were sat in were ripped and cracked and (again) sticky. I mean we're talking low class diner seats. Come on! Gross. So then the food. The menu is confusing, claims to be fusion and I'm not an expert but I think it was just Chinese food and Sushi I'm not sure where the fusion was but don't count that against them I guess. Anyway the menu is filled with pictures which again was tacky. We ordered some jalapeno popper things and some chow fun stuff and a garlic mushroom chicken thing. While we were waiting for our food I noticed what I previously mentioned, the TV. The TV does nothing but display food you probably already ordered or maybe might order which you can also see in your menu, but you should order it because it's repeating the same foods all close up style. When it's not showing food it's showing someone's kitchen at some house that I'm assuming got catering, and another catering event that looks like didn't even have Chinese food or sushi at it but like fruit salads and bread rolls. So anyway, you get to dine with an infomercial. Yay!!! Now the food was okay, but not worth the price in my eyes. The jalapeno appetizer was good but the jalapenos weren't fresh they were the jarred one's i think. They were that pickled green color and very small. Plus 8 bucks for 6 tiny jalapeno halves? No thanks. The chicken in the garlic chicken tasted old, but the chow fun was pretty good. It was an expensive meal for 2 entrees and an appetizer. I don't think I was paying for ambiance either. So the server brings us our check and everything and my boyfriend pays in cash, and mentions he'd like change back. The server says Okay of course no problem. Which is fine. Then he brings back the change and asks "did you want change" ..now let me just mention it wasn't busy in here so it's not like there were tons of people trying to get his attention... My boyfriend says yes I'd like change please, he says okay, then comes back and brings him the biggest bill possible and just looks at him then asks, do you want me to break that for you? My boyfriend says yes. I mean really? tacky. We are good tippers but that's awful. And this guy was horrible, he was half giggling the whole time. I guess the joke was on us by showing up at this joint. I conclusion I'd say avoid this place at all costs. My only hope is there are new owners some day that can make it a quality spot. I can throw a rock at a few other Chinese food places around town that have way better quality food that's worth your duckets, and maybe you'd be spending a few less duckets in comparison. I will say I had a good laugh when we left with our shoes sticking to the floor as I looked over by the front door and saw a little area where they sell souvenirs like you find in China Town or Daiso stores. T-A-C-K-Y. All in all not for me, horrible experience and kind of a dirty place. I would have walked out if I wasn't so hungry at the time. In hindsight I would have been better off doing just that.

I always order sushi, the Four Seasons roll is amazing..if you like spicy the fireballs are yummy too. I like to sit at the bar and watch them make it...and because I love extra sauce..haha. They're very quick and decent price for the size and quality of sushi.

First time dining since they changed from buffet. Was curious if they were as good as some of the reviews. Can't say I liked it enough to go back. Go Go sushi was descent. We didn't like Peking ribs, but the amount of food was generous. Noticed the same furniture as before, cooks looked familiar too. In particular, one of the female servers was rather unpleasant putting down our dish talking Chinese very loudly to the other server lady who followed after her. Excuse me? I mean excuse you! I thought this was a nicer place than a whole in a wall Chinese restaurant.

Picked up a huge pick up order and has issues: * Items that were paid for were not provided * Sushi and sashimi was not fresh and some of it was thrown away * I tasted one piece of sashimi that went bad and spit it out If you pick up an order from them look through it to make sure you are getting what your paying for and that items are fresh/edible.

Okay so I finally tried this place with my friend and I liked it. It is a little pricy, but the food is tasty and the place is beautiful. The staff can be a little more friendly, but they were okay. We ordered two rolls, the crunchy roll and some other one that I can't remember but was delicious. Also, they have the best dressing for their side salad...its like a honey walnut dressing that is creamy and addictive. Also, I really liked the chicken lettuce wraps. Overall a nice experience.

Great sushi at a fair price. The staff was very friendly and never felt ignored. Great service! Multiple staff dropped by the table to check on us. No beer on tap though. A little bit of a let down for me. All in all great place - I'd recommend it.
